What happened on the day you were born?

Kate over at The Five Fs is celebrating her birthday with a really special meme. She wants to get as many bloggers as possible to write about what happened on the day they were born and then spread the word. I was tagged by Caroline from Mummy Alarm and here is what happened on the day I was born:

When is your birthday? 29th April

Pick three people who share your birthday and share what you know about them:

Daniel Day Lewis – an English actor with both British and Irish citizenship. He won Academy and BAFTA awards for Best Actor for his portrayals of Christy Brown in My Left Foot and Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood

Andre Agassi – Retired American professional tennis player and former world no 1, considered to be one of the greatest players of all time. Also called the Best Service Returner in the history of the game

Uma Thurman – American Actress and model has performed in leading roles of many of my favourite films such as Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill.

Is anyone listed as being born on the same day as you (i.e. 1984)? If so, what do you know about them?

Phil Tufnell – a former English cricketer turned TV personality. “Tuffers” played 42 and 20 One Day International matches for England. After retiring he has been seen on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here,  A Question of Sport and Strictly Come Dancing

List three people who died on your birthday and tell us what you know about them:

Saint Catherine of Siena – 1347 – 1380 A tertiary of the Dominican Order. Proclaimed a Doctor of the church in 1970, she is one of the two patron saints of Italy together with St Francis of Assisi. She remains a greatly respected figure for her spiritual writings, and political boldness to “speak truth to power”— it being exceptional for a woman, in her time period, to have had such influence in politics and on world history.

Alfred Hitchcock – 1899 – 1980 A British film director, producer and cameo appearance actor. He pioneered many techniques in suspense and psychological thriller genres. He pioneered the use of a camera made to move in a way that mimics a person’s gaze, forcing viewers to engage in a form of voyeurism. He framed shots to maximise anxiety, fear, or empathy, and used innovative filmediting.

AS Douglas – 1921 – 2010 – a British professor of computer science, credited with creating the first graphical Computer game OXO (also known as Noughts and Crosses) a tic-tac-toe computer game in 1952 on the EDSAC computer at University of Cambridge.

List three notable events that took place on your birthday:

1770 – James Cook arrives at and names Botany Bay, Australia.

1945 – World War II – Fuehrerbunker: Adolf Hitler marries his longtime partner Eva Braun in a Berlin bunker and designates Admiral Karl Dönitz as his successor. Both Hitler and Braun will commitsuicide the next day.

2011 – Wedding of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Kate Middleton.

Tell us about a holiday that falls on your birthday:

Ri?ván (Arabic: ?????? Ri?wán; Persian transliteration: Ri?ván <Persian pronunciation “Rizwan”>) is a twelve-day festival in the Bahá’í Faith, commemorating the commencement of Bahá’u’lláh’s prophethood. It begins at sunset on April 20 and continues until sunset, May 2. On the first (April 21), ninth (April 29) and twelfth days of Ridván (May 2), work and schooling should be suspended.

“Ridván” means paradise, and is named for the Garden of Ridván, outside Baghdad where Bahá’u’lláh stayed for twelve days after the Ottoman Empire exiled him from Baghdad and before commencing his journey to Constantinople.

It is the most holy Bahá’í festival, and is also referred to as the “Most Great Festival” and the “King of Festivals”.

Good idea for a post! I was born on boxing day 1972. There was an important airstrike on Vietnam, the plane crash victims in the Andes resorted to cannibalism and Lou Reed recorded the album ‘American Poet’ live in New York. Apart from that stuff it was a regular day…!
