This month has flown by, I am surprised by how one week rolls into the next and before I know it, the month of January is on it’s way out!

Last time I wrote, I spoke about my choice of word to guide me through 2018, Willpower. This post is a catch up to see how far I have got and what changes, if any, to make.

My biggest achievement to date is my Couch to 5K efforts. I am so surprised at myself – pleasantly surprised. Let me explain …

I have always been one of those people who sniggered when they saw runners struggling up hills – why would you do that when you can sit comfortably at home? Who raised eyebrows at the sight of runners out in the rain and I have always declared – I am not a runner. I don’t like running. I will never run.

Fast forward to January 2018 and I have had to eat my words – every single one of them.

I have joined our local SLGR (So Let’s Go Running) group who meet on a Tuesday evening, which conveniently ties in with the twin’s Brownie session, and I take part in the C25K training (Couch to 5k). This is all part of my Willpower challenge with myself. I have notoriously, all my life, started activities and then religiously dropped them a few weeks in for all manner of ridiculous reasons. I am determined to change this even and complete the C25K even if I don’t know what will happen once I reach the 5k (if I reach the 5k).

To give you a better insight into what the C25K challenge is I have copied the program below, I have completed two weeks and on Tuesday will be tackling Week 3 – a two minute run with 90-second walk intervals.

Weeks 1-6 start with 5 mins walking warm-up

Weeks 1-5 = 4k
Weeks 6+ = 5k

Week 1 – 30 sec run/90 sec walk
Week 2 – 60 sec run/90 sec walk
Week 3 – 2 mins run/90 sec walk
Week 4 – 2 mins run/1 min walk
Week 5 – 4 mins run/1 min walk
Week 6 – 5 mins run/1 min walk
Week 7 – 7 mins run/1 min walk
Week 8 – 10 mins run/1 min walk
Week 9 – 15 mins run/1 min walk
Week 10 – 5k run

It’s advisable to repeat the run at least once every week, so last week I took part in my first Park Run and this morning, Sunday, I went out on my first solo run and re-ran the course we complete on a Tuesday. I was amazed that I did it and I had a better time too. I am incredibly proud of myself as I have always been so anti-running and yet, here I am doing exactly that.

I am using the Strava app to record all of my runs, connect with me if you’re on there too.

For now, I can safely say I am on track with this aspect of my Willpower challenge. Other areas included

Writing – and on this, I am slacking but for all good reasons that, if they come to fruition, I shall be more than happy to share with you.

Reading – I am on my third book this year, a good Patricia Cornwell. I used to read her books when I lived in Italy and discuss them in minute detail with my friend Nicoletta so reading this book takes me back to those times too.

Getting fit and losing my baby weight (yes I know it’s been 9 years!) – There hasn’t been much movement on the scales to date but I have been trying to work my way through all of the Christmas chocolate. I am nearly done with it and so hopefully this will start to improve too. Half a stone off and a tighter tummy by June – here I come.

Let it be said I am happy with my willpower progress, it might not be 100% but so far so good. Well done me!

run faster shoes

Here she goes again right? Whittling on about getting fit and pwah ha ha! Couch to 5k? 

When I first spoke to husband about this idea he told me not to bother, he said, ‘You know you won’t do it, why bother in the first place?’ Not the best encouragement I’m sure you’ll agree but he does have a point. I continue, Every Single Year to want to get fit, I yearn to have back my youthful body, no saggy belly, no lumps and bumps the  proof that time is slowly showing it’s face on me.

I look at some of my friends on my Facebook timeline, they LOVE sport! Some cycle, some run, some go for brisk walks and then there’s me, typing at a ‘puter all day every day (which I love, don’t get me wrong) but I need to get out, I need to get fit, I need to do something.

But how?

Well there are lots of initiatives around, Race for Life, Race for This, Race for That, all raising money for charity and giving people all over the country the urge to get up and run.

I am not a huge fan of sport which is weird because at school I had activities every single evening, netball, hockey, gymnastics, ballet. I grew out of it I suppose and had the luxury of living in a good body that consumed all the junk I put in.

Nowadays with my metabolism slowing down, I don’t seem to be able to do such a good job anymore with the calories I consume. This then makes me feel sad and so I get all ‘Who cares? I might as well cheer myself up with a bit of chocolate.’ and bang I am back in the vicious cycle again.

I have decided to start small.

I have made the first step by downloading the app Couch to 5K and then I spoke to various people about doing Race for Life – shall I? Shan’t I? I’m so undecided.

Anyway I chatted about this whole dilemma with SportsShoes and they said I am not alone, that women and men up and down the country have the same lack of get up and go but maybe a brand new pair of running shoes would be more encouraging than husband? What an idea SportsShoes, maybe you are right? Some new Run Faster shoes might do the trick.

So I ordered that pair at the top, it took me a while to decide as there are hundreds of designs, colours, models and makes but I am very happy. I have been wearing them on the school run (it’s a start, right?) I love how there are no laces to tie up, just that black thing to pull. They are also super comfy, almost comfy enough to start running a bit – next week because you know it’s Bank Holiday weekend and I’m not sure I’ll fit any running in…

Disclosure: SportsShoes very kindly sent me a pair of trainers for the purpose of this post BUT also to try and encourage me to get up and out more. They have some beautiful trainers and at very reasonable prices too.

Six? Seven weeks into 2011? and so far not a massive amount of progress on any keep fit/dieting regime I may have loosely promised myself at the start of the year. Oh but that is so typically me that anyone who knows me didn’t even raise an eyebrow there. Sport is sooo not my thing, I mean I like an aerobics lesson, loads of women in a hot stuffy room all jumping, running and moving to pounding music trying their best to keep up with the insanely thin instructor. That’s ok but the girls won’t stay in the creche without bursting into tears so I had to give that up. Consequently the sport area of my life has been filled with er…nothing.

But dear readers, on closer inspection of said area I have been doing one tiny little thing which may just make an enormous difference. It’s quite exciting isn’t it? You see every time I leave the house and change from my slippers to ‘outdoor’ footwear I have been slipping into my Reebok Easytone trainers. Now this isn’t a sponsored post, Reebok sadly did not courier me a pair of their running shoes with promises that I’d have an Elle Macpherson body by Easter if I wrote a few words. No,no, no. I flicked through my Next catalogue as my old trainers were busted and I needed to replace them. If you’re like me you will hate the day when you actually have to give in and consign those beloved treasures to the bin but my toes were peeping through the front stitching and if it rained too much my feet got wet so execution day it was for my old trusted Nikes.

There was no way I was facing a shoe shop with the twins in tow, so catalogue it was and surprisingly there were quite a few different options open to me but a pair of trainers that promised to tone my butt and my legs whilst I went about my every day tasks was too much to refuse. I ordered a pair right away and anxiously waited their arrival. That was back in September and since then I have got more and more used to them, wearing them ever more frequently. When I tried them on for the first time I noticed immediately I was taller this is probably due to the exclusive feature of Moving Air Technology with balance ball inspired pods (sounds magnificent doesn’t it?) These pods create micro instability and softness with every step and boy you should see me walk these days ;)

So £75 later, what are my thoughts? Well I like them. They look like a normal pair of trainers but to the untrained eye I’m having a mini workout, a micro workout where it counts. I wear them with jeans or track suit and I wear them every day, shopping, taking the girls out or just family walks. Have I noticed an improvement yet? Well that was my question to you, what do you think?

Personally I need to step up my training regime and I shall have you know that I am planning to walk 20 mins – half an hour on the days Paul gets back from work around 6 o’clock. These sessions will include brisk walking and as I get fitter interspersed with bursts of running, she writes confidently. Oh it all sounds so good on paper doesn’t it?

Should the lovely people at Reebok wish to send me a pair of size 5 Easytone Flip‘s to try out this Spring/Summer I could continue this experiment for a lot longer and give you all such a more detailed review allowing you to decide whether you too would like a cute derriere just like mine.
