I think it might be my best achievement to date, being a finalist in the Family & Lifestyle category of the BiBs 2017 awards! Holding down a full-time job, running a home and family and on top of that writing is not a task for the weak. Continuing to write is a passion, it has to be otherwise why else would I use my precious free time to keep on at it? But it has paid off and I am wearing my finalist badge with honour.

I am over the moon considering the exceptional quality of blogs out there. Loyal readers will know that I have been blogging for over 7 years now, I started in 2010 when there were a mere few hundred blogs and we spent our time writing, commenting and learning the skill that has since become so popular. It was a very different scene back then compared to the explosion of great blogs there are today.

The new bloggers are way more savvy than I was when I first started and it is evident from their presentation, their superb promotional skills and the way they write confidently. However, I have made it to the finals as I have many times in the past, even with my first nomination back in 2010, look I still have my badge!

I can’t tell you what it would mean to win this award, having reached the finalists on so many occasions and being pipped at the post I am kind of setting myself up for another disappointment, but like everything in life – if you don’t give it your best shot then you’ll never know. I am very British about asking for votes (which clearly doesn’t help my case) but PLEASE, would you vote for my little blog in the Family & Lifestyle category?

Votes close on 2nd July  – THIS SUNDAY – so please don’t wait, go straight in and plant your cross on my name. I will be forever grateful to you. Just click on the link below and thank you for taking the time.

BiBs 2014

Can you believe it?

I can’t believe it?

Is it true or am I going to wake up anytime soon from the Best Dream Ever.

Allow me my moment if you per-lease as I, Mari’s World, made it through to the Top 6 Family blogs in the BritMums BiBs awards.

To say I am thrilled to bits is a bit of an understatement, to say I am ecstatic is closer to the truth. To say I am now a bit worried is spot on as the final decision is down to a judge and I am up against some spectacular names on the blogging circuit, each and every one of them damned good at what they do.

Here’s a snippet of what my brain has been doing ever since I heard the news…

I’m not going to win.

Stop being so negative!

Have you seen who’s on the list?

You’re just as good as them.

No I’m not, you’re just saying that because you know me.

Stop fishing for compliments it’s not becoming.

Then sort out your dreadful grammar and punctuation.

I said buy a book and get to grips with how to write the English language.

Why didn’t you tell me before?

You wouldn’t listen.

Get out! I have to listen to you, you’re in my head, All The Frigging Time.

{short pause}

Oh God, what can I do to win?

I’m not God sweetheart but you can start cleaning your act up a bit.

What do you mean?

Well clear out the trash?

What trash? I thought you liked my blog?

Don’t get paranoid, keep on doing what you’re doing and do it like really, really good.

I will, I’ll try and thank you for always being there.

Yeah yeah, I know, now go thank your readers and voters, they’re the ones who got you this far not me.

So I went out and bought myself a book on punctuation you’ll be glad to know as it did come to light that I write terribly long sentences are you breathing yet or still waiting for a full stop or a comma?

And breath.

Ready for another?

Please check out the other fantastic bloggers who I am up against and THANK you for voting for me and sticking with me these past four and half years, even through the trash and crap. At least I saved you the potty training … oh no I didn’t, did I?

socrates quote change

I was reminded of something today, that change is necessary if you want to evolve and get better and it’s only by taking a step back and taking a long hard look at your work that you see where you have gone wrong, that you spot where you can improve and you can see what fails and what works.

Blogging is a funny old business to be in, I think if you ask any blogger they will tell you that since they started, their blog has been the weirdest journey of their life.

What started out for many, me included, as a hobby or pastime quickly became a way of life, a passion that couldn’t be quenched and then on to a means of earning money.

The other thing about blogging is the more you dig the more you find and the more there is to learn, it is a relatively new area to be in along with social media so there is no fixed formula, it’s a dive in and do it job. It’s constantly evolving and there are always new things to do. If you’d told me about HTML code and links and editing photos 4 years ago I would have looked at you quite blankly. But I know more about it now and although some stuff is really heavy going, other bits I can tackle now.

I spend part of my time per week visiting other blogs, reading their work and commenting, I pick up excellent tips from them, I spot things I like and others I don’t like then I go back and take a good look at Mari’s World and ask myself what can be done to make this better?

A new look, I thought.

After all who doesn’t like to get their hair done or buy something new to wear to lift their spirits? So I got the Geek Fairy in to wave her wand and although it’s not complete I am liking this new look, just a little more housekeeping and Mari’s World will be ready for the next chapter of her book, whatever that may be.

Not content with just a new look I’ve been brain-waving a lot recently – it’s exhausting me and I hope the phase is soon complete because my poor brain is starting to pop and fizzle out BUT of the hundreds of ideas that came forward – and some were pretty rubbish trust me – I have started a new blog with my daughter Megan.

Folgaria News

It’s a new idea, I haven’t seen anything like it before so I’m stabbing in the dark and trying to create something special. It could totally backfire on me – I hope it doesn’t but I’ve got to try, haven’t I?

Folgaria News a bilingual blog written both in English and Italian and it’s all about Folgaria, the mountain village I lived in for almost 20 years. It’s written from two points of view; mine – in English and Megan’s in Italian.

Folgaria News blog

Folgaria is a sleepy town of 3000 but it’s main trade is tourism which boosts the village up to 30,000. Summer holidays in the fresh mountain air and skiing in the winter, thousands and thousands of people pass through every single year from all over Europe, many come back time and time again but think of all the people who have never heard of it?

The concept is simple, reach as many people as we can, tell them what is happening in Folgaria. Create an archive of information, photos, fun and inspiration. Create a place that a visitor to Folgaria can search and come up with ideas on what to do tonight, for a day trip, on holiday IN TWO LANGUAGES.

I think this has legs, I’m going to push on with it and see where it takes me.

I’ve asked you once before but a gentle reminder as voting is over as of this Friday the 16th and I’d love to be amongst the finalists for the Family category of the BiBs. It would give me something to show for the four long years I’ve sat typing away at my laptop, it would make all those dreadful early posts where I was learning my trade worth it. It would also make my day. Please click on the badge below, it will take you to the Survey and Mari’s world is in the Family Category, thank you.

Did you make the BiBs? I didn’t. I got through to the shortlist for Video and I was very excited, for a minute there I let myself think about the possibility of lifting the cup, taking some silverware home to show my family.

“Look! Look! People like my work.’ I would show them.

How many other bloggers out there are slightly disappointed that their name wasn’t called out as Finalists in this years MADS awards? Hands up guys. Are we allowed to say we’re sad we didn’t get through? Or am I shooting myself in the head?

I am truly happy for all of those who did make it especially those I voted for myself and now I shall make sure I vote them through to the finals but for the rest of us? What do we do now?

Did you, like me, have a massive insecurity pop? Am I writing crap? Should I be Tweeting more? Facebooking more? Networking more? Probably yes, that is the answer but just how much time do I have on my hands for this time consuming social media lark?

Maybe the fact I had been shortlisted twice led me to believe I was in with a chance?

Maybe I should have pushed the voting for my blog more? I did nothing but add the badge to my blog and hope, doing the British thing and not wanting to disturb anyone.

I’ve received a few emails today asking for my vote which is very clever marketing but I’m old school and hate being told what to do. It annoyed me as it’s something I wouldn’t do but maybe that’s wrong too? Maybe I should be doing that, maybe I should change?

I’ve been asked to enter other Blogging awards around the sphere but sincerely I’m not sure I can be bothered to. Will an award change my life? Probably not. It may bring exciting opportunities, a badge to display ever so proudly but other than that? Life goes on, the girls grow up and fresh opportunities will come along anyway.

So what to do? Carry on blogging that’s what. Chin up, be gracious to those who are through, VOTE for your favourites and don’t let it affect who you are and what you are blogging for.

And an enormous THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to make sure my name was on those shortlists I am very appreciative and truly flattered of all of your votes and that you thought I was worthy of your vote

Love Mari xxx
