Chit chat: Blogging, Folgaria News and awards

socrates quote change

I was reminded of something today, that change is necessary if you want to evolve and get better and it’s only by taking a step back and taking a long hard look at your work that you see where you have gone wrong, that you spot where you can improve and you can see what fails and what works.

Blogging

Blogging is a funny old business to be in, I think if you ask any blogger they will tell you that since they started, their blog has been the weirdest journey of their life.

What started out for many, me included, as a hobby or pastime quickly became a way of life, a passion that couldn’t be quenched and then on to a means of earning money.

The other thing about blogging is the more you dig the more you find and the more there is to learn, it is a relatively new area to be in along with social media so there is no fixed formula, it’s a dive in and do it job. It’s constantly evolving and there are always new things to do. If you’d told me about HTML code and links and editing photos 4 years ago I would have looked at you quite blankly. But I know more about it now and although some stuff is really heavy going, other bits I can tackle now.

I spend part of my time per week visiting other blogs, reading their work and commenting, I pick up excellent tips from them, I spot things I like and others I don’t like then I go back and take a good look at Mari’s World and ask myself what can be done to make this better?

A new look, I thought.

After all who doesn’t like to get their hair done or buy something new to wear to lift their spirits? So I got the Geek Fairy in to wave her wand and although it’s not complete I am liking this new look, just a little more housekeeping and Mari’s World will be ready for the next chapter of her book, whatever that may be.

Not content with just a new look I’ve been brain-waving a lot recently – it’s exhausting me and I hope the phase is soon complete because my poor brain is starting to pop and fizzle out BUT of the hundreds of ideas that came forward – and some were pretty rubbish trust me – I have started a new blog with my daughter Megan.

Folgaria News

It’s a new idea, I haven’t seen anything like it before so I’m stabbing in the dark and trying to create something special. It could totally backfire on me – I hope it doesn’t but I’ve got to try, haven’t I?

Folgaria News a bilingual blog written both in English and Italian and it’s all about Folgaria, the mountain village I lived in for almost 20 years. It’s written from two points of view; mine – in English and Megan’s in Italian.

Folgaria News blog

Folgaria is a sleepy town of 3000 but it’s main trade is tourism which boosts the village up to 30,000. Summer holidays in the fresh mountain air and skiing in the winter, thousands and thousands of people pass through every single year from all over Europe, many come back time and time again but think of all the people who have never heard of it?

The concept is simple, reach as many people as we can, tell them what is happening in Folgaria. Create an archive of information, photos, fun and inspiration. Create a place that a visitor to Folgaria can search and come up with ideas on what to do tonight, for a day trip, on holiday IN TWO LANGUAGES.

I think this has legs, I’m going to push on with it and see where it takes me.

Awards

I’ve asked you once before but a gentle reminder as voting is over as of this Friday the 16th and I’d love to be amongst the finalists for the Family category of the BiBs. It would give me something to show for the four long years I’ve sat typing away at my laptop, it would make all those dreadful early posts where I was learning my trade worth it. It would also make my day. Please click on the badge below, it will take you to the Survey and Mari’s world is in the Family Category, thank you.

It certainly is a journey, the most surprising thing is that it can lead us into starting other blogs, far removed from how we originally set out. I love the new blog Mari, a really innovative idea x

    • May 15, 2014 / 9:24 AM

Our blogs do record everything don’t they? Mind you I have nipped back and trashed a few of the early posts I must admit, on the other hand I have discovered great ideas I had that with some new photos and a lick of paint will be great to go again

Change is good, just as good as the weird journeys our blogs have taken us on. If it wasn’t for my piece of the webernets I’d never have met to many awesome people :D

    • May 15, 2014 / 9:25 AM

You are absolutely right Paul and our paths may have never crossed either!

  9. May 14, 2014 / 10:10 PM

Change can be good. If I haven’t had to change because of my kids, my job – I would never have blogged, never have met you and many other wonderful people. Change can help us strive to better things. Your new blog looks wonderful; and I know you and yours will make it a success.

    • May 15, 2014 / 9:26 AM

Thank you Helen, at least after the change there is a period of peace and settling down – I shall look forward to that bit :)

Love this post Mari, it’s so interesting to reflect on your blogging journey isn’t It? I look back at some of my first posts and cringe a bit, but it’s good to see how far you’ve grown and improved. I LOVE the sound of the Folgaria News – what a brilliant idea. Lots of luck with it, I know you and Megan will do a brilliant job x

    • May 15, 2014 / 9:28 AM

Thank you Ruth, we are very excited about Folgaria News at the moment, long may it last. Looking back I found cringeworthy but I also found material that re-worked will make some great posts in the future so I’m digging them out and breathing new life into them thankfully I have convinced myself it wasn’t all bad :)

I love the makeover, I love the new blog! I love the colour, bustle and fun you have in Mari’s world and the wise and down to earth way you approach life, I will always love seeing what you do next. Remember meeting you in 2011 to learn how to vlog with Britmums – we’ve come a long long way!

    • May 15, 2014 / 9:31 AM

I’m so happy that we met Penny and have followed this path together, we have since climbed Snowdon, written about epilators and bread machines and had a lot of laughs too.
I must get back to a bit of vlogging but I find it so time consuming – isn’t the whole blogging lark though?

  13. May 15, 2014 / 9:31 AM

You are totally right. Blogging is weird and wonderful and it has opened up new worlds to me but the best thing is meeting such amazing people through blogging I’d never have met otherwise, like you! Your blog was one of the first I read and I find it really inspiring. Good luck in the BIBs you really deserve it!

    • May 21, 2014 / 3:40 PM

I’ve been reading yours too as we had the twin connection from the word go, it’s been amazing watching you grow too and long may it continue!

    • May 21, 2014 / 3:47 PM

I hope so and I also hope it boosts the resorts presence on the map of tourism, that would be the cherry on top

  16. May 19, 2014 / 1:03 PM

Wise words indeed about blogging. It’s one heck of a journey & as soon as I’ve mastered something, there’s always a new thing I need to get to grips with.
The new blog with your daughter sounds fabulous. One of my daughters occasionally guest posts on mine & her blogs always go down well. Good luck x

    • May 21, 2014 / 3:48 PM
